Georgia - St. Mary's, Laura S. Walker

St. Mary’s Georgia March 27 – 30/09

Sadly we left Ft. Clinch State Park after only a 2 night stay and headed to Georgia and St. Mary’s Koa an hour away. We would have liked to stay on Amelia Island longer but were not able to extend our stay due the high demand for spots in that Park. We had booked ahead but could only get 2 nights. However St. Mary’s Georgia is a nice area where we have spent time before and being at the KOA enabled us to catch up with the internet and the world with cable TV. We also played the King’s Bay Naval Base Golf Course which is a gem and very inexpensive. We biked in the town of St. Mary’s and these baby owls high up in a live oak tree on a busy street were attracting lots of attention! (try clicking a picture to enlarge it ) It’s nice to be in Georgia again. It’s always on my mind!

Laura S. Walker State Park, Waycross Georgia March 30 – April 3/09

Itwasn’t a long drive to Laura S. Walker… an hour and a half and we arrived early enough to claim our favourite lake front site. We stayed there for a few days last year. The azaleas were just past peak bloom but still glorious. We arrived early enough to get a golf game in at the amazing Lakes Course there. We walked it Monday and Tuesday enjoying it thouroughly.

John put the kayak in for a paddle while it was calm Tuesday afternoon. Rain was in the forecast so he decided to make the most of it. I didn’t paddle since my back was uncomfortable due to poison ivy or something breaking out. More on that later. Notice the lake level where John put in.

Build an ark? Move to higher ground? The rain came in a deluge and thunder and lightning seemed right on top of us on Tuesday night. John disconnected us from shore power and we went on battery power before going to bed for fear of a lightning hit or surge. The noise was so loud you had to turn the TV up full volume but we ended up just turning it off. I slept restlessly with the sound of the storm finally receding. The area got about 4 inches of rain!

Thursday the rain came again and I really thought we were up the creek! I kept looking out the window and monitoring the size of the puddles. The thunder and lightning wasn’t as close as Tuesday but the rain was torrential and lasted for hours. Cabin fever drove us to gear up and walk the campground when the rain let up slightly. In the morning the sight was amazing. Check out where John had put the kayak in 2 days earlier! Apparently 8 inches fell in those rainstorms. Thank goodness Friday morning was sunny and calm and we were not in the lake. It certainly had encroached on the campsite, getting close to the road just on the other side of us. As we drove toward Jekyll we noticed fast running ditches, the Satilla River was flooded and water was lying everywhere. At first I was happy to see rain since we were in drought conditions for 4 months while in Lakeland. But I got over that quickly! Next stop; Jekyll Island! I can hardly contain my excitement since we love it there and also will meet up with Grant and Gisele and Ken and Kathy.
