June 2nd, St. Andrew's - around town

Colourful painted doors and flower pots give stone buildings such a quaint look.  The outdoor pipes are deceiving.  The plumbing here is very modern!

St. Andrew's is not just about golf, believe it or not!  It is a vibrant town with busy shops, a castle, a cathedral, a tower and the oldest university in Scotland.  Add to that a beach and a harbour and you have a lovely venue for everyone.  On a sunny weekend tourists and locals flock here.
One thing I love about Europe, and Scotland and Ireland are no exception, is the small service shops.  You see butchers and bakers in every town and here Ann took advantage of the watch repair shop.

The Harbour

You can tour the information centre and museum that explains the history of the Castle and Cathedral to learn the facts but I love letting my imagination run wild when walking the ruins.

The castle from the road to the Cathedral
Through the gate.

Castles are fortresses with the best views in town but human cruelty is evident everywhere.   This I do not like to imagine!

Also, human ingenuity...here is the loo!

Imagine enemy ships approaching.

The Cathedral ruins leave lots to the imagination but one thing is for sure...it was humungous!  (over 100 metres long) This is a view of the cathedral from St. Rules Tower.

St. Rules Tower is in the Cathedral grounds but predates it.   It served as the Church Priory until the dedication of the Cathedral in 1358.  The Cathedral took forever to build and didn't last long...think "Pillars of the Earth."
