Will I ever get enough of this place? John has figured out we have now spent a total of 10 weeks on Jekyll beginning with a couple of March Breaks when we were working units. Other travel plans might affect a visit next spring but I know for sure we will be back here in the future. If it weren’t for John’s brother Ken and Ann we may never have heard of this place, so I am glad they told us all about it and we came to see for ourselves.
You get the idea; we enjoyed it thoroughly; again! This time Grant and Gisele arrived for 2 nights on their way home from Florida. Also, Ken and Kathy from Sanlan and Southampton spent a few days. We also met their friends Dave and Mildred also from Southampton here. It was wonderful to have friends to show around. The 8 of us went on an “around the Island” bike ride on Saturday in perfect conditions. No wind, low tide, bright sun and enthusiasm got us going South on the Beach all the way to the end of the Island! We had a picnic and stopped a couple of times on the way home for a “refreshment” making it a great day over all. Not everyone has the tough “bike butts” that John and I have developed from year-round cycling and going long distances, so it was a great accomplishment. We rode over 18 miles that day. We topped the day off with a combined barbeque and later Dave and Grant entertained us with their campfire guitars!
Once friends had left we settled into our own routine biking around the Island. We have golfed a few times as well. Luckily, Masters Week had a deal; you could walk or cart 18 holes for $20 each! We met up with Dave and Nellie from Michigan who we met here 3 years ago. We had a game of golf with them as well. They have been coming to Jekyll for over 25 years. It tends to do that to people.
Dinner at the Wharf restaurant, Latitude 31, with Grant and Gisele was a highlight as usual. The sunset didn’t let us down. And it was John’s birthday. Also, we ate one night at Crane Cottage, one of my favourite restaurants anywhere. In this downsized, simplified life we really don’t eat out much so this was much appreciated.
There has been rain and storms around the Southeast but we have managed to stay safe. Manatee Springs State Park is closed right now due to the flooding of the Suwannee River so we got out of there just in time!
Unfortunately John and I are struggling with some kind of poison ivy, sumac or oak. At least that is what we are guessing. I broke out first and him 2 days later. We picked it up at Laura S. Walker we think but not really sure. We have been to a walk in clinic (me twice) and are hoping we are on the mend. The docs don’t know what it is either; they just call it contact dermatitis. It could be a reaction to a chemical or a plant but considering where we have been the past few weeks I would guess plant. We will be a little more careful when hiking, biking, golfing or whatever in unknown territory. There are hazards out here in retirement land!
We leave here for tomorrow and will spend another week in Georgia before heading further north. Looking forward to meeting up with Ken and Ann at Richard B. Russell State Park in Northern Georgia.
Okay! We are heading home! PLEASE…let it warm up!!
