Dana Point Whale Watching Tour

Dana Point  Whale Watching (not)

Well it was disappointing in a way but compensation by dolphins helped.  We took the whale watching tour out of Dana Point, about 15 minutes north from San Clemente.  At 2 p.m.  we headed out of the huge harbour in fog.  The fog lifted as we got out further and before long a Pod of dolphins was sighted.  And that was something else.  I have never seen anything like it.  But that was nothing compared the larger Pod we came accross shortly after.  This one could be seen from a long distance; the water was churning and dark.  I think there were thousands.  And then we saw a huge flock of pelicans and gulls.  The dolphins were herding fish and once they were gathered in one area they had a feeding frenzy and the birds were joining in the fray.  So despite seeing no whales this was quite a sight.  The dolphins were loving the wake of the boat, a 95 foot touring boat.  They raced along the wake and in the bow waves giving us quite a show.
We met up with Norm and Betty Ann McArthur from Kincardine who were staying at Huntington Beach.  We had a lovely dinner at a wharf restaurant.  Another great day in Californ-I-A!!

If you google this you can see several videos of the effect of the tsunami on the Harbour at Dana Point.  The tide was still churning back and forth when were sitting at the wharf on Sunday.  There was some damage there.
